The Teutopolis Lady Shoes capped another highly successful tennis season by capturing the championship of the Effingham St. Anthony Sectional.

T-Town’s Macy Probst and Isabelle Hemmen teamed to win the doubles competition, while St. Anthony’s Emily Kowalke was the singles champion.

The Lady Shoes finished with 24 team points and St. Anthony was runner-up with 18. Paris was third with 15 points, followed by Effingham with 14, Casey-Westfield 13, Robinson 12, Charleston 4, Newton 4, Mattoon 4 and Shelbyville 0.

In the singles competition, Emily Kowalke posted four straight victories without dropping a set to emerge as the sectional champ. After a first round bye, she beat Madison Mapes (Effingham), 6-3, 6-0; Carley Habing (Teutopolis), 6-3, 6-0; and Kendall Mathews (Paris), 6-2, 6-4 to reach the finals. Kowalke then defeated Grace Hoene (Teutopolis), 6-4, 6-2.

Hoene finished second overall in singles. To reach the finals, she beat Elaina Short (Mattoon), 6-3, 6-0; Madison Emmerich (Newton), 6-1, 6-0; and Riley Arend (Effingham), 6-4, 6-3.

Arend was fourth overall. She beat Lily Graham (Pairs), 6-0, 6-0; and Lisa Henry (Robinson), 6-3, 6-3 to reach the semifinal round. She then lost to Hoene and Matthews.

Also competing in singles play was Ali Adams from St. Anthony.

In doubles play, T-Town’s duo of Probst and Hemmen also swept through four matches without losing a set. After a first-round bye, they beat Delaney Keown/Aleah Wallis (Shelbyville), 6-0, 6-0; Eden Wendling/Lydia Kull (Effingham), 6-0, 6-1; and Eva Richardson/Gwendalyn Eckerty (Casey-Westfield), 6-2, 6-1 to reach the championship match. In the finals, Probst/Hemmen beat Allison Kowalke/Caroline McDevitt (St. Anthony), 6-2, 6-1.

The Kowalke/McDevitt team won their first three matches to reach the finals. They beat Kenna Koester/Lexi Will (Teutopolis), 6-2, 6-1; Emily Sherwood/Emma Mason (Casey-Westerfield), 6-4, 6-1; and Sarah Staller/Lucy List (Robinson), 6-3, 6-2.

Also competing in doubles play were St. Anthony’s Peyton Sehy/Grace Karolewicz and Effingham’s Aila Woomer/Gracie Kroenlein.

Normally, girls would advance to the state tournament, but due to COVID-19, there will be no state tournament this year.

Teutopolis sweeps Newton

The tennis victories just keep piling up for the Teutopolis Lady Shoes.

T-Town notched another Thursday afternoon, posting a 9-0 win over Newton.

Lady Hearts fall to Robinson

Robinson swept all six singles matches Thursday afternoon, en route to a 7-2 win over Effingham.

The Teutopolis Lady Shoes turned in a dominating performance Monday afternoon, posting an 8-1 tennis victory over the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs.

T-Town won five of the six singles matches and all three doubles matches to roll to the win.

The word “dominate” has been used to describe most of the Teutopolis tennis victories this fall.

And there’s no better word to use again after the Lady Shoes performance in the Apollo Conference Tennis Tournament, played in Effingham.

T-Town captured first place in eight of the nine events to easily capture the conference championship with 60 points. Mattoon was runner-up with 44 points, followed by Effingham with 37, Mt. Zion 22, Mahomet-Seymour 20, Charleston 20 and Lincoln 5.

Teutopolis is competing in the Apollo Conference this year due to COVID-19 and the difficulty in scheduling matches.

Macy Probst, Grace Hoene, Isabelle Hemmen, Carley Habing and Olivia Hemmen all won singles titles, while the doubles teams of Probst/I. Hemmen, Kenna Koester/Lexi Will and Hoene/O. Hemmen also emerged as champions.

The Lady Hearts had four second place finishes – Gracie Kroenlein and Madison Mapes in singles; and the doubles teams of Riley Arend/Mapes and Aila Woomer/Kroenlein.

There were nine girls from the competing schools that were named to the All-Apollo Conference Tennis Team – Probst, Hoene, I. Hemmen and Habing from T-Town; Arend, Eden Wendling and Lydia Kull from Effingham; and Emily Stortzum and Tess Huene from Mattoon.

St. Anthony girls beat Newton

The St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs turned in a strong performance Monday afternoon, posting an 8-1 win over Newton.

No. 1 Singles – Emily Kowalke won 6-0, 6-1; No. 2 Singles – Caroline McDevitt won 6-3, 6-2; No. 3 Singles – Ali Adams won 6-0, 6-1; No. 4 Singles – Laura Schmidt won 6-0, 6-1; No. 5 Singles – Peyton Sehy won 6-2, 6-2; No. 6 Singles – Grace Karolewicz won 6-3, 6-2; No. 1 Doubles – Allison Kowalke/McDevitt won 6-1, 6-1; No. 2 Doubles – Sehy/Karolewicz lost 2-6, 2-6; No. 3 Doubles – Adams/E. Kowalke won 6-1, 6-0.

The Teutopolis Lady Shoes won four of the five divisions Saturday to come away with the championship of the St. Anthony Tennis Invitational.

T-Town won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles titles, plus No. 1 and No.2 doubles, and finished second in No. 3 singles to finish with 33 teams points, well ahead of St. Anthony, which won No. 3 singles and ended with 24 team points.

Effingham had 21 team points to finish third in the eight-team field. Maroa-Forsyth was fourth with 12 points, followed by Mt. Zion with 8, Shelbyville 5, Mahomet-Seymour 4 and Charleston 3.

In No. 1 singles, T-Town’s Grace Hoene went 3-0 to emerge the champion. She defeated Effingham’s Riley Arend 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 in the finals. St. Anthony’s Emily Kowalke was third.

In No. 2 singles, the Lady Shoes’ Carly Habing emerged as the winner. She won all three matches, including a 6-1, 6-1 victory over St. Anthony’s Ali Adams in the finals. Effingham’s Eden Wendling finished third.

The No. 3 singles champion was St. Anthony’s Laura Schmidt. She won three straight matches, including a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Kenna Koester, from THS, in the final round. Lydia Kull, from Effingham, was third.

In No. 1 doubles, the Teutopolis team of Macy Probst and Isabelle Hemmen proved unbeatable. They posted three match victories, including a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Allison Kowalke and Caroline McDevitt, from St. Anthony, in the championship. Effingham’s duo of Gracie Kroenlien and Aila Woomer finished fourth.

In No. 2 doubles, it was the T-Town team again in the winner’s circle. The duo of Lexi Will and Olivia Hemmen won all three of their matches. That included a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Effingham’s Madison Mapes and Izzy Volpi in the finals. St. Anthony’s team of Payton Sehy and Grace Karolewicz were fourth.
