Numerous Effingham High School athletes were recognized at the Winter Sports Banquet.

That included wrestling.

Letter winners were – Ian Light, Dylan Lonngren, Gabe Schuette, Zach Worman, Megan Hanna, Marcus Hites, Erika White, Shawn Cochran, Zac Slifer, Wyatt Sparks, Jordan Herschberger, Jon Perry, Mitchell Strohl, Ryan Smith, Colin Marschewski, Edgar Castillo, Jamison Brown and Robert Reardon.

Individual award winners for wrestling were:

Most Improved Wrestler – Ian Light

Most Valuable Offensive Wrestler – Jon Perry

Most Valuable Defensive Wrestler – Colin Marschewski

Rookie Award – Ryan Smith

Heart Award – Gabe Schuette, Colin Marschewski

Effingham’s Jon Perry will compete in the IHSA State Wrestling Tournament.

Perry posted a 4-2 record Saturday to finish fourth in the 145-pound weight class at the Vandalia Sectional.

The state tournament will be Thursday and Friday at the State Farm Center in Champaign.

Perry started the sectional with a 12-3 win over Tyler Golliher (Benton). After being defeated 19-4 by Anthony Federico (Althoff), Perry won three straight matches. He pinned Nick Mason (Wood River) in 5:36 and Logan Nancy (Vandalia) in 2:30, and then beat Jack Bruso (Rochester) 13-8.

In his final match, Perry was pinned by Caleb Mix (Auburn) in 1:48.

The Effingham wrestling team traveled to Fairfield Wednesday night and dropped a 49-24 decision.

The Hearts will wrestle Saturday at Cumberland

Effingham’s John Perry placed third in the 145-pound weight class Saturday at the Robinson Regional.

Perry, who went 5-1 overall, will now compete in the Vandalia Sectional.

He opened the regional with a pin in 44 seconds over King (Carmi). After dropping an 11-4 decision to Hermann (Robinson), he then won four straight matches to get third place. He pinned Rohdemann (Shelbyville) in 2:41 and Hiett (Fairfield) in 1:08, and finished with a 10-3 decision over Jones (Monticello) and a 9-2 win over Warner (Cumberland).

The other wrestler to place was Wyatt Sparks, who went 2-2 and finished fourth in the 170-pound class. Each of his four matches was decided by pin.

Marcus Hites, at 285 pounds, went 3-2 overall. All of his matches were determined by pin as well.

In addition, Zach Worman went 1-2 at 182 pounds; Erika White 0-2 at 120; Colin Marschewski 0-2 at 138; Zac Slifer 0-2 at 152; and Edgar Castillo 0-2 at 160.

The Effingham wrestling squad hosted Robinson Tuesday night and dropped a 66-15 decision.
