Lady Hearts beat Vandalia

The Effingham Lady Hearts swept all six singles matches Tuesday afternoon, en route to an 8-1 victory over Vandalia.

Here are the EHS results:

No. 1 Singles – Riley Arend won 6-2, 6-1; No. 2 Singles – Eden Wendling won 6-2, 6-3; No. 3 Singles – Lydia Kull won 6-3, 6-1; No. 4 Singles – Aila Woomer won 6-1, 6-0; No. 5 Singles – Gracie Kroenlein won 6-2, 6-1; No. 6 Singles – Abby Kyle won 6-1, 6-1; No. 1 Doubles – Wendling/Kull won 8-1; No. 2 Doubles – Arend/Madison Mapes won 7-2; No. 3 Doubles – Ariel Rubin/Kaitlyn Parker lost 6-8.

 

Lady Bulldogs sweep Paris

The St. Anthony girls turned in a dominating tennis performance Tuesday afternoon, winning all nine matches and not dropping a single set in a 9-0 victory over Paris.

GOLF

Lady Bulldogs win triangular

Macy Ludwig fired a one-over 37 Tuesday afternoon, helping the St. Anthony girls golf team post a victory over Champaign St. Thomas More and Effingham at Effingham Country Club.

The Lady Bulldogs finished with a 165 team score, followed by St. Thomas More with 177 and Effingham at 206.

For St. Anthony, Ellie Wegman shot 41, Nina Hakman 43 and Lauren Schwing 44 to complete the team scoring. Reagan Westendorf (45) and Morgan Schuette (55) also competed.

For the Lady Hearts, Ava Boehm finished with a 44, followed by Anna Sigg at 49, Annie Frost 55 and Anna Hirtzel 58. Also playing for EHS was Ella Niebrugge (60) and Marah Kirk (65).

 

Effingham boys 2nd in quadrangular

The Hearts drove to Decatur Tuesday and finished second in a four-team contest played at South Side Golf Course.

Mt. Zion claimed team honors with a 169 total. Effingham posted a 177, followed by Taylorville at 187 and Shelbyville at 220.

For EHS, Colby Haynes had the best round with a nine-hole score of 42. Preston Latch shot 44, Ryker Schneider 45 and Max Woelfer 46 to complete the team score. Nick Burgess (48) and Ethan Ritz (53) also competed.

 

T-Town girls drop dual match

Teutopolis and Charleston faced each other Tuesday afternoon at Cardinal Golf Course, with the Lady Trojans posting a 181-195 victory.

For the Lady Shoes, Averie Bushue was the medalist and led the way with a 42. Abigail Wortman and Lexie Niebrugge both shot 50 and Alaina Helmink 53 to complete the team score. Josie Deters (71) also competed.

Numerous Effingham High School athletes were recognized at the Fall Sports Awards ceremony.

That included girls tennis.

Letter winners were – Caroline Kull, Riley Arend, Lydia Kull, Riley Seachrist, Eden Wendling, Chloe Aden, Gracie Kroenlein and Aila Woomer.

The Effingham Lady Hearts hosted Robinson for Seniors Night, but dropped an 8-1 decision in tennis.

Between the singles and doubles matches, EHS recognized the two seniors on the squad – Caroline Kull and Riley Seachrist.

“It’s been a pleasure to coach both of these girls,” said EHS coach Erik Williamson. “They’ve been important players in our success and they will surely be missed.”

The Lady Hearts will close out their regular season with a match at Flora.

The Effingham girls tennis team ended its regular season in Flora Tuesday afternoon with a 6-0, rain-shortened loss.

The doubles matches were not played due to rain.

“Three singles matches went to tiebreakers, but all came up a couple points short,” said EHS coach Erik Williamson. “A few key points and we’re tied 3-3 with Flora, who is right there with some of the best teams around. I’m excited about how far we’ve come with so many young players.”

The Lady Hearts will play in the St. Anthony Class 1A Sectional on Friday. The Teutopolis Lady Shoes and St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs will also compete in that sectional.

Effingham entertained Greenville Tuesday afternoon and dropped a 6-3 decision in girls tennis.
