Tate Niebrugge and Aiden Beck combined to shoot a 79, win the Alternate Shot competition and help Effingham to a third place overall finish in the Mt. Zion Invitational, called “The Cup.”

The tournament is divided into three contests – four-ball, scramble and alternate shot.

Charleston won the four-ball and finished second in the alternate shot and emerged the winner in the nine-team field. The Trojans finished with 230 points, followed by Mattoon with 239 and Effingham with 252.

Ben Donsbach and Austin Waldhoff had a terrific scramble round, finishing with a 76. Ryker Schneider and Ethan Ritz shot 97 in the four-ball.

“Congrats to Tate and Aiden,” said EHS coach Jeff Schafer. “The alternate shot is, by far, the hardest to play. I appreciate their willingness to do it and it paid off for them both. Ben and Austin were right there in the scramble until the last few holes. If a shot or two goes the other way, they had a chance to win, as well. So it was good day for us overall.”

The Hearts will play today (Saturday) at the Windsor/Stew-Stras Invitational.

Ava Boehm and Morgan Krouse both shot sub-40 rounds Thursday, helping the Effingham Lady Hearts post a 32-shot victory at home in girls golf.

Boehm finished with 37 and Krouse 39, as the Lady Hearts finished with 160 total strokes, compared to 201 by Charleston.

Kennedy Collier shot 42 and Anna Sigg 51 to complete the EHS team score. Jaelyn Boone (52), Anna Hirtzel (58) and Madi Stortzum (63) also played.

The Lady Hearts will play Saturday in the Windsor/Stew-Stras Invitational.

The Effingham and Teutopolis boys golf teams squared off Wednesday afternoon at Effingham Country Club.

Austin Waldorf shot a 40 and Tate Niebrugge added a 41, leading the Hearts to a 170-198 victory over the Wooden Shoes.

Ryker Schneider finished with a 44 and Aiden Beck added a 45 to round out the EHS scoring. Also playing for Effingham were Ben Donsbach (48), Ethan Ritz (54), Nick Burgess (54), Colby Haynes (54) and David Spechtler (54).

T-Town was led by Drew Kerner and Zach Ruholl, who shot 44 and 45 respectively. Andy Niebrugge finished with a 54 and Gabe Schlick 55 to complete the scoring. Also competing were Kayden Zerrusen (60), Gavin Meyer (62), Petyon Tegeler (65), Paul Niemerg (71) and Gage Wendt (76).

Ava Boehm continued her fine play this fall, shooting a 37 and helping the Effingham Lady Hearts notch a golf victory Tuesday afternoon at Salem.

The Lady Hearts finished with 183 strokes, easily topping Salem, who finished with 231.

Kennedy Collier shot 42, Anna Sigg 47 and Anna Hirtzel 57 to complete the EHS scoring. Jaelyn Boone (58) also played.

EHS will host Charleston Thursday afternoon.

The Effingham boys golf team hosted Vandalia Tuesday and won its first dual match of the season.

Tate Niebrugge and Aiden Beck both shot rounds of 41, helping the Hearts to a 176 total and a nine-stroke victory over the Vandals at Effingham Country Club. Ben Donsbach finished with 45 and Austin Waldhoff 49 to round out the team scoring. Also playing for EHS was Ethan Ritz (49), Ryker Schneider (50), Nick Burgess (47) and Colby Haynes (50).

“The boys hung in there very well,” said EHS coach Jeff Schafer. “They didn’t play their best golf, but their maturity definitely showed. They shrugged off some poor shots and found a way to score. We have made a lot of strides since the first match last year.”

The Hearts will return to action today (Wednesday) at home against Teutopolis.
