Mt. Zion took advantage of errors in one game and then put together a late rally in the nightcap to post a doubleheader sweep at home Saturday over Teutopolis.
The Braves managed just one hit in the opener, but five T-Town errors led to four unearned runs and a 4-2 loss.
In the second game, the Braves rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 7-6 win and complete the sweep.
In the first game, the Shoes took a 2-0 lead in the second. Evan Addis led off with a base hit, followed by a single by Dylan Pruemer and a walk to Logan Roepke to load the bases. Sam Bushur then came through with a two-out single to drive home a pair.
It stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth. Mt. Zion had a runner reach base on a dropped third strike and another after being hit by a pitch. Two errors helped the Braves score three runs and Jacob Bailey’s RBI double capped the four-run inning.
The Shoes loaded the bases in the fifth, but were unable to score. They only had one baserunner over the final two innings.
Andy Niebrugge pitched the first 4.2 innings and took the loss. He didn’t allow a hit, but did give up three unearned runs. He walked four and struck out seven. Derek Konkel pitched the final 1.1 innings.
In the nightcap, the Braves were on top 3-1 when the Shoes came to bat in the sixth. Cade Buehnerkemper started things off with a single and ended up at third when his base hit was misplayed in the outfield. He scored on a single by Pruemer. A ground ball brought home the second run and Bushur, again, delivered a two-out single, driving home a pair and give T-Town a 5-3 lead.
Mt. Zion scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie it, but the Shoes came right back in the top of the seventh. Buehnerkemper, again, started it with a base hit. He went to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pruemer.
But THS couldn’t maintain the lead. The Braves got a walk and an error to start the seventh-inning rally. Bailey tied the game with a base hit and Ethan Parker ended it with a walk-off bunt single that brought home the winning tally.
Derek Deters, who relieved in the seventh, took the loss, despite giving up an unearned run. Kendall Schmidt was the starter, but lasted only two-thirds of an inning, walking five and giving up three runs. Pruemer relieved in the first and pitched 5.1 innings. He allowed just three hits and three runs, while walking four and striking out seven.
The Shoes dropped to 12-6 overall and 1-2 in Apollo Conference play. They will return to league play Monday at home against Mahomet-Seymour and stay home to face Newton on Tuesday.
The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes took advantage of two errors to push across the winning run and finish with a 6-5 win Thursday at home over Altamont.
The game was tied 5-5 when the Shoes came to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Kayden Althoff led off and reached on the first error and Evan Wermert walked. Andy Niebrugge then hit a hard ground ball that was misplayed and allowed Althoff to race home with the game winner.
The Shoes had to rally from an early 3-0 deficit. And they didn’t dent the scoreboard until the fifth.
Evan Addis led off with a base hit, followed by a walk to Dylan Pruemer and a single by Derek Deters to load the bases. With two outs, Sam Bushur came through with a base hit up the middle to drive in two and cut the lead to 3-2.
T-Town then tacked on three more runs in the sixth. Niebrugge started the rally with a base hit and Addis then ripped a double to drive in the tying run. Pruemer put the Shoes on top with an RBI double and Logan Roepke capped the inning with a run-scoring single to give THS a 5-3 lead.
But Altamont came back to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Mason Robinson reached on an error and Brennyn Abendroth followed with a double. Both runners eventually scored on ground outs.
The Indians took a 2-0 lead in the second. Jared Hammer and Bradin Baucum both walked, and with two outs, Brayden Stuemke delivered a two-run single. Altamont then put together three straight singles to make it 3-0 in the third, with Baucum getting the RBI hit.
Deters, the third Teutopolis pitcher, got the win. He worked one inning. Cade Buehnerkemper pitched the first six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out seven. Mitch Althoff started the seventh and allowed two runs.
Mason Winn relieved in the sixth and took the loss, giving up the unearned run in the seventh. Kaden Eirhart went the first 5.2 innings. He allowed eight hits and five runs, while walking two and striking out eight.
Both teams are now 12-4 on the season.
The Shoes will return to action at home Saturday. They will host Mt. Zion in an Apollo Conference game.
Andy Niebrugge delivered a game-winning, two-run single in the top of the seventh inning Monday afternoon, lifting the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes to a 5-4 win at South Central.
The Shoes trailed 4-3 entering the final inning. Sam Bushur reached on an error, and Kayden Althoff and Evan Wermert both walked to load the bases with no outs. Niebrugge then drove a base hit to left field and Bushur and Althoff both raced home to put T-Town on top.
The Cougars did put two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but Derek Konkel retired the final two batters to secure the victory.
The Shoes broke on top in the first inning. Bushur reached on an error and Althoff was hit by a pitch. Wermert ripped a two-run double and eventually scored on a fly ball off the bat of Evan Addis to stake THS to a quick 3-0 lead.
South Central scored a pair of runs in the fourth and pushed two more across in the fifth to go ahead 4-3.
Konkel relieved in fifth and got the win. He allowed just one hit over his 2.2 innings of work. He walked four and struck out five. Hayden Ruholl started and went the first 4.1 innings. He gave ups six hits and four runs, while walking three and striking out two.
The Shoes have won seven of their last eight games and improved to 11-3. They will be back in action today (Tuesday) at home against Lincoln in an Apollo Conference game.
Lincoln took advantage of a lead-off walk to push across the winning run in the sixth inning, finishing with a 3-2 victory at home Tuesday over Teutopolis.
The game was tied 2-2 when Seth Tungate got a walk to start the bottom of the sixth. Tungate stole second, went to third on a fly ball and scored on Daulton Miller’s ground out.
The host Railers scored two runs in the opening inning, but the Shoes tied the score in the fourth.
Andy Niebrugge led off with a walk, Evan Addis singled and both runners moved up on a ground out. With two outs, Mitch Althoff delivered a base hit that drove in both runners and tied the score at 2-2.
Addis pitched a strong game, but took the loss. He allowed just four hits and three runs, while walking three and striking out two.
The Shoes dropped to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in the Apollo Conference. They will return to action Saturday with another Apollo Conference game at Mt. Zion.
Highland built a five-run lead and managed to hang on Friday afternoon, posting a 6-4 win at home over Teutopolis.
The game was tied 1-1 before the Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the third and added two more in the fourth to build the 6-1 advantage.
The Shoes tried to stage a comeback.
They scored twice in the fifth to close within 6-3. Sam Bushur led off with a base hit and Evan Wermert doubled. Then with two outs, Evan Adds came through with a base hit that drove in both runners.
T-Town added another tally in the seventh. Wermert walked, Andy Niebrugge had a base hit and Addis drove home the run with a fly ball. The Shoes had two runners on base before the final out was recorded.
Cade Buehnerkemper, the second of fourth THS pitchers, took the loss. He allowed six hits and five runs over 1.2 innings of work.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak and dropped the Shoes to 10-3. They will be back in action today (Saturday) at home against Mahomet-Seymour in an Apollo Conference contest.
