Holden Clifton and Logan Fleener delivered run-scoring hits in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday, giving the North Clay Cardinals a 6-4 victory over Teutopolis in the championship game of the North Clay Classic.
The Shoes trailed 3-0 after the first inning, but battled back and eventually tied the game when Derek Konkel blasted an 0-1 pitch over the leftfield fence for a solo home run in the top of the sixth.
But Collyn Ballard started the Cardinals winning rally with a lead-off double in the bottom of the frame. Clifton put the hosts on top with a one-out double and Fleener capped the scoring with a two-out single.
The Shoes were retired in order in the seventh.
North Clay took a 3-0 lead in the opening inning. Fleener had an RBI single, Dakota Weidner drew a bases-loaded walk and the final run scored on a wild pitch.
The Shoes responded with a three-run inning of their own in the second. After the first batter was retired, Logan Roepke, Dylan Pruemer and Caleb Siemer had back-to-back-to-back singles. After Siemer’s base hit, an error by the North Clay outfielder allowed two runs to cross the plate. Cade Buehnerkemper also had a base hit and the second error of the inning accounted for the third run.
North Clay resumed the lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Donnie Zimmerman and Konkel knotted the score with his round-tripper in the sixth.
Sam Bushur pitched the first five innings for T-Town and took the loss. He gave up six hits and five runs, while walking four and striking out three. Clifton went the distance for the Cardinals and got the win. He gave up six hits and four runs. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter, while throwing 97 pitches.
Cade Buehnerkemper drove in the tying run in the seventh and Dylan Pruemer came through with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to give the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes the walk-off 5-4 victory over North Clay at home Thursday.
The previously unbeaten Cardinals held a 4-2 lead going to the bottom of the seventh. And after retiring the first two T-Town hitters, they were just one out from a win.
But Pruemer got the rally started with a base hit. Two of North Clay’s four errors helped one run to score and Buehnerkemper then delivered a two-out single that tied the score.
Then in the eighth, Kayden Althoff ripped a one-out double. A walk and fielder’s choice loaded the bases before Pruemer hit a fly ball to left that allowed Althoff to race home with the winning run.
North Clay scored single tallies in the first three innings to build a 3-0 lead. Derek Konkel blasted a solo home run in the third and the Shoes added an unearned run in the fourth to close to within 3-2.
Buehnerkemper relieved in the sixth inning. He pitched the final 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball to get the win. He allowed two hits, while striking out two and walking one. Konkel pitched the first 5.2 innings.
The Shoes improved to 5-7. They will play Saturday in the North Clay Classic.
Anthony Budnaura blasted a pair of home runs and drove in four runs and Aiden Dodson added a two-run shot, helping the North Clay Cardinals rally from an early deficit and post a 7-4 victory at home Monday over Teutopolis.
The Shoes grabbed a quick three-run lead and was on top 4-1 before North Clay used the long ball to come back.
Budnaura belted a solo home run in the fourth, then ripped a three-run homer in the fifth to put the Cardinals on top. Dodson capped the scoring with another four-bagger, driving home two in the bottom of the sixth.
Things looked good early for T-Town. Sam Bushur led off the game with a walk. With one out Kayden Althoff got his first of three hits and Derek Konkel followed with a two-run double. On the play, Konkel ended up coming all the way around to score, staking the Shoes to a 3-0 lead.
North Clay scored a single tally in the second, but THS responded in the fourth. Cade Buehnerkemper walked, went to second on an error and scored on an RBI single by Dylan Pruemer. The Shoes did get hits in each of the final three innings, but were unable to score further runs.
Kayden Althoff went the first 4.2 innings and took the loss. He allowed five hits and five runs, while walking three and striking out eight. Pruemer pitched the rest of the way. Spencer Johnson relieved in the third inning for North Clay and got the win.
The Shoes dropped to 3-7 on the season. They will return home to face Woodlawn today (Tuesday).
The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes scored five runs in the opening inning and rolled to a 12-0, five-inning win at home Tuesday over Woodlawn.
The Shoes scored in each inning and added another five-run frame in the third. They finished with nine hits in the contest.
T-Town took control at the beginning. Mitch Koester reached on an error to start the bottom of the first. He went to second on a ground ball and scored what proved to be the winning run on a base hit by Ben Goeckner. An error and a walk loaded the bases. Caleb Siemer then walked to force in a run, a wild pitch allowed another run to score and Brett Kreke added a two-run single to stake the Shoes to a quick 5-0 lead.
THS added single tallies in the second and fourth and pushed five across in the third. Siemer had an RBI double, Kreke and Koester run-scoring singles and two runs scored on a pair of wild pitches.
Garrett Gaddis pitched the first four innings and got the win. He allowed just two hits and struck out four. Goeckner retired the side in order in the fifth.
The Shoes improved to 4-7. They will play at home Thursday against North Clay.
Sam Bushur pitched six strong innings and drove in three runs Saturday morning, leading the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes to a 5-3 victory over Putnam County in the first of two games.
In the second contest, the Shoes staged a big comeback after trailing by seven runs, but North Clay pushed across a run in the eighth inning to escape with a 9-8 decision.
In the opener, Bushur gave up a run in the opening inning, but then shut Putnam County down over the next five frames. The senior right-hander allowed just two hits over six innings of work, but left the game after throwing 104 pitches. He walked four and struck out 10. Dylan Pruemer pitched the seventh and allowed two unearned runs.
The Shoes took the lead in the third without benefit of a hit. They took advantage of three errors and two walks to go on top 2-1.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth, when the Shoes put together a three-run rally. And it all started after two were out.
Logan Roepke singled, Pruemer walked and Ben Goeckner followed with an RBI base hit. After Caleb Bloemer singled to load the bases, Bushur delivered a base hit up the middle that drove home two more.
The nightcap was all North Clay through the first 4½ innings. They banged out 13 hits, including a home run by Carson Burkett and a two-run triple by Bryton Griffy, to build an 8-1 lead.
But the Shoes began their comeback in the bottom of the fifth by pushing across five runs. With one out, they strung together six straight hits. Mitch Althoff and Kayden Althoff got things started with back-to-back singles with one out. Derek Konkel and Roepke both drove in runs with base hits, Caleb Siemer followed with a two-run double and Pruemer capped the inning with an RBI double that trimmed the gap to 8-6.
T-Town tied the game in the sixth. With two outs, Kayden Althoff singled and Konkel followed with a two-run homer that sailed over the leftfield fence.
But in the top of the eighth, the Cardinals used a lead-off single by Donnie Zimmerman, followed by an error, a walk and a ground ball by Burkett to score the winning tally.
The Shoes finished with 14 hits in the game. Kayden Althoff had four and Pruemer collected three more to lead the way. Konkel had three RBI.
Siemer, who relieved in the fourth, pitched the final 4.1 innings and took the loss. Cade Buehnerkemper was the starter.
The Shoes are now 3-6 on the fall season. They will play today (Monday) at South Central.
